C2 – Forest disturbance mapping
Combining Continuous Forest Monitoring to map forest disturbances in a timely manner.
Methods
Domain
This candidate service will use synergies with the Continuous Forest Monitoring candidate service to map forest disturbances continuously. The goal is to identify potential main disturbance agents at sites of identified forest change (e.g., biotic agents: bark beetles; abiotic agents: wildfires, drought stress, storm damage, logging activities). For this goal, innovative AI/ML methods will be combined with in-situ reference datasets on forest disturbance for model training and various time series information from the continuous monitoring service prototype (S1). For selected EvoLand prototype sites, maps of forest disturbances will be generated and patterns and trends in disturbance size, frequency and change severity will be analysed, to evaluate the disturbance causes.
