C4 – Cover crop type mapping
Developing a prototype service to map cover crop types at 10m resolution.
Domain
Cover crops (e.g. ryegrass, barley, alfalfa, clover, radishes, turnips) are recognised by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as an important practice to efficiently reduce soil and nutrient losses and to increase the soil organic matter. The VLCC service aims already at providing information on when and where cover crops are being grown but doesn’t distinguish between the cover crop type. The aim of this candidate is therefore to develop a prototype service to map cover crop types at 10m resolution. To do so, we will rely on novel collected in-situ data on cover crop types (cf. T2.2) as well as hierarchical set of inter-connected deep learning models based on Sentinel-1 & 2.
