CLMS Prototypes
EvoLand will develop twelve next-generation Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) product candidates monitoring the status and changes of land use/land cover and various land surface characteristics at high resolution. This will become possible through innovative approaches in data fusion, continuous monitoring, AI, and biomass mapping, as well as by integrating novel EO and in-situ data.
The main result of EvoLand will be up to eleven operationally benchmarked and qualified candidate CLMS services with a TRL5-7, which will have the potential to be taken up and integrated into CLMS by the Entrusted Entities from 2025 onwards.
Thematic domains
The 12 CLMS candidate prototype services we are developing are looking to address challenges across five domains.
Agriculture
Supporting agribusiness actors ranging from policy makers to farmers with cutting edge Copernicus products.
Water
Finer spatial resolution for improved water mapping and sound decision-making.
Forest
New and upgraded Copernicus products to support EU Forest and Biodiversity Strategies for 2030.
Urban
Frequently updated urban mapping for sustainable and efficient planning
General land cover
Continuous and on-demand land cover mapping at a finer resolution to support EU and international policies.
12 CLMS prototypes
EvoLand will develop twelve next-generation Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) product candidates monitoring the status and changes of land use/land cover and various land surface characteristics at high resolution.
C1 – Continuous Forest monitoring
EvoLand will improve the timeliness of the status and change of High-Resolution Layers (HRL) products for Forest Monitoring by providing near real-time information (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly). Aiming for an almost fully automated processing approach, it is looking to achieve a 10m spatial resolution.
C2 – Forest disturbance mapping
Combining Continuous Forest Monitoring to map forest disturbances in a timely manner.
C3 – Forest biomass mapping
High-Resolution Layer (HRL) Vegetated Land Cover Characteristics (VLCC) with spatiotemporally consistent estimates of above-ground woody biomass (AGB) and Forest Canopy Height (FCH).
C4 – Cover crop type mapping
Developing a prototype service to map cover crop types at 10m resolution.
C5 – Cropland/grassland GPP monitoring
Rolling out high-resolution GPP data (10-daily, 10m) for grassland and cropland, currently non-existing over Europe.
C6 – Small landscape features mapping
Improving accuracy and efficiency through novel data to support Small Landscape Features (SLF) products.
C7 – Improved water bodies mapping
Finer resolution for water bodies and water networks by means of novel EO-data and super resolution.
C8 – Continuous imperviousness monitoring
Constant monitoring of artificially sealed areas including the level of sealing of the soil per area unit.
C9 – Automated land use mapping of urban dynamics
Combining Machine Learning (ML) with optical Earth Observation (EO) data to automatically detect and characterize urban changes.
C10 – Continuous mapping of land surface categories
Developing continuous mapping of land surface categories at 10m resolution based on Sentinel 1 & 2 data.
C11 – On-demand land cover mapping
Creating a new on-demand land cover mapping service.
C12 – Tree type mapping
To deliver a three-yearly update of tree types across Europe, covering at least 13 different classes to complement the HRL portfolio.
